  • 16.3.12 - Aidan Rymill success at the Saatchi Gallery

Aidan Rymill (5 years old ) has been awarded Runner Up for the Saatchi Schools Sculpture Prize, an international art prize,  for his 'Christian the Lion' piece.

Aidan’s lion is based on a real lion called 'Christian' which lived on The Kings Road in the 1970s after being bought by his owners at Harrods!

Christian was exercised in the garden of The Moravian Church in Chelsea, where Aidan learned about him (& watched clips of him on 'You Tube') as his church meet here regularly and Aidan plays here in the garden.

Aidan wanted to make a 'rainbow' lion and liked the sculptures of Robert Bradford (seen at Art London & The Affordable Art Fair) who uses lots of little toys to make colourful & fun animals. Aidan carefully decided which of his toys he wanted to use for his sculpture and bought other bits & pieces from a charity shop.

The inner structure (armature) is made from a litre plastic water bottle, card tubes from a roll of foil, a plastic pie lid (mane) and a polystyrene ball for the head. Aidan stuck these together with gaffa tape then covered them with 'mod rock' plaster bandage. This was sprayed with gold enamel paint then the toys were stuck using glue.

The exhibition, which will be running until 15th April 2012, is on the 2nd floor in the Education Room, Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York Square, Kings Roads SW3 4SQ(Sloane Sq tube) .
